Nelva Richardson, the Artist

I have been an artist all of my life. For over thirty years I have been a medical illustrator enjoying the challenges of learning and communicating fascinating and complex medical information. I have always loved rendering exquisite details: forms described by surfaces and textures catching different lights and shadows.

The advent of computer art and graphics changed and challenged those of us who work in illustration and art. As much as I have enjoyed the new technology for creating medical illustration, I came to realize that I missed the tactile nature of using traditional media: pencil on vellum, oil paint on canvas, watercolor on paper, etc.

During a vacation in Italy, it occurred to me to try painting with red wine. My first painting was made as a thank-you card to our friends. Since then my enthusiasm continues for the combining of my love for art and wine and for my passion for all things Italian.

Currently there are prints and cards of my wine paintings for sale in wineries in Napa and Sonoma Valleys. I am available for individual commissions to paint places of significance, such as your place painted with your own red wine, or a portrait of yourself or a loved one painted with your favorite red wine.
